Monadnock Launches New Wet Label Protection Product Using EarthCoating

Monadnock's Envi Enhanced Barrier (EB) Label with EarthCoating is an enhanced offering for beer and wine brands.

Monadnock Paper Mills, a provider of high-performance specialty papers for the technical, packaging and printing markets, has released its Envi Enhanced Barrier (EB) Label with EarthCoating. The product is available in a 100% post-consumer-waste fiber, bright white, smooth stock and a virgin fiber, bright white, vellum stock. These drop-in replacements for BOPP (Bi-Oriented Polypropylene) film laminated labels offer improved aesthetics, performance and sustainability for products that are subject to high-moisture conditions, such as white wines and craft beers. Monadnock entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Smart Planet Technologies for use of its extruded EarthCoating technology for adhesive beverage labels in North America in December 2014.

“We have expanded our Envi EB)label line offering beverage brands the option of tactile vellum virgin fiber or smooth 100% recycled fiber,” says Tim Boyd, market segment manager at Monadnock. “Both of these high-performance Envi Label Stocks will retain their beauty, integrity and brightness during the converting and bottling process and after hours immersed in an ice bucket.”

With this coating, the high performance labels contain less plastic and adhesive while offering improved opacity, brightness and wet-strength when compared to traditional BOPP film laminated labels.

“Customers are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, so the ability for brands to offer labels with less plastic holds enormous appeal,” adds Richard Verney, chairman and CEO of Monadnock. “This innovation aligns well with our plastic-replacement strategy and complements our Envi Portfolio of substrates, which provides brands with sustainable options that do not require a compromise in performance or aesthetics.”

A new solution to solve the problem of paper cups being sent to landfills

April 22, 2015 -  Newport Beach, CA -  Smart Planet Technologies, Inc., a leader in the engineering of innovative barrier coatings that address sustainability challenges in packaging, announce the commercial availability of the reCUP™, the first commercially available paper cup engineered for recyclability.

Unlike traditional paper cups, produced from polyethylene-coated paper cup stock, which are difficult for recyclers to process, the reCUP™ leverages EarthCoating• barrier technology and may be processed through existing paper recycling streams without any need for special handling or additional equipment.

The reCUP™ is a recyclable paper cup that can be reclaimed and turned into recycled paperboard. Industry adoption of the reCUP™ has the potential to avoid sending over 50 billion paper cups worth of valuable paperboard to U.S. landfills each year. This alone, can potentially solve two-thirds of the one-million ton fiber shortfall projected by the recycled paper industry for the year 2020.

For more information, please visit our website at SmartPlanetTech.com/reCUP™.

Smart Planet Technologies announces engineering breakthrough in compostable coatings with EarthCoating Compostable

The development of a high-performance compostable and recyclable barrier coating to replace traditional polyethylene coatings March 31, 2015 - Newport Beach CA - Smart Planet Technologies, Inc., a leader in engineering of innovative barrier coatings that address sustainability challenges in packaging, announce a breakthrough in engineering with EarthCoating Compostable, a mineralized compostable resin for extrusion-coating onto paperboards.

Traditionally, food service packaging such as hot/cold cups, ice cream containers, frozen food cartons and food trays, are coated with 100% polyethylene and similar materials for barrier properties to moisture, oils, grease and fatty acids. Paperboards with these legacy coatings are poor candidates for recycling and generally destined for a landfill. Compostable resin coatings, which can be composted in industrial composting facilities, have risen recently as a sustainable option to traditional polyethylene coatings. However, adoption has been limited because of increased cost, inferior barrier performance, production challenges, and limited availability of municipal composting facilities. Further, these coatings have failed to address the need for recyclability.

EarthCoating Compostable is a mineralized compostable resin formulation, using minerals to displace 35% of the plastic content, with the mineral blend engineered to alter the performance and behavior of the resin to achieve marked improvements that address the challenges with compostable resins. As with other formulations of EarthCoating, the mineral content allows for successful processing of the coated paperboard in paper recycling streams.

EarthCoating Compostable has the following advantages over traditional compostable resin coatings:

• EarthCoating Compostable contains 40% minerals, which lowers cost and reduces polymer content.

• EarthCoating Compostable has excellent machinability. The mineral content improves production line speeds and allows for lower coatweights than traditional compostable resins.

• The barrier performance of EarthCoating Compostable is comparable to that of polyethylene at equivalent coatweights.

• EarthCoating Compostable is heat sealable, making it suitable for formed cup applications.

• EarthCoating Compostable is engineered for recyclability in paper recycling streams.

Paperboards with EarthCoating Compostable technology offer a compostable and recyclable option for the approximately 1.3 million tons of 100% polyethylene-coated paper cup and folding carton material produced annually in the US.

Commercial availability of EarthCoating Compostable is planned to be announced in the near future.
