News Release
International Paper, Leading Supplier of Coated Paperboard, Exploring Sustainable Packaging Options with Smart Planet Technologies™
New technology reduces plastic used in coated paperboard products.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – January 11, 2013 -- International Paper (NYSE: IP) announced today it has completed a license agreement with Smart Planet Technologies to explore the development of products using EarthCoatingTM, a mineralized barrier coating for paperboard products. The company’s coated paperboard division plans to create a line of folding carton and cupstock products within their Everest® and Fortress® grade lines that would improve yield and reduce plastic use while offering the same barrier properties available today. Trial work and pilot testing are scheduled for the first quarter of 2013.
The EarthCoating mineralized resins are innovative, high performance coatings, which contain less plastic than traditional low-density polyethylene coatings. EarthCoating resins are heat-sealable and FDA-compliant for direct food contact.
“International Paper has a long history of providing innovative fiber-based packaging that is essential to everyday life”, said, Greg Gibson, vice president, Coated Paperboard. “As a leading supplier to the consumer packaging and food service markets, we know that paperboard converters and consumer product companies are focused on reducing the amount of packaging material they use while maintaining the required protective barriers and print performance. Our development initiative with Smart Planet Technologies and EarthCoating represents our efforts to create innovative and sustainable products that meet those needs."

Environmentally Conscious Packaging for Whole Foods Market
Fra’Mani Handcrafted Foods is making some fabulous food exclusively for Whole Foods Market. They selected ARTICO to design and create their unique packaging for this new pre-prepared foods product line. Once the product is finished cooking, the food is flash chilled and packed in air tight pouches that seal in freshness, color and flavor. These pouches are then packed in boxes made of 100% recycled paperboard. To keep the box from falling apart because of the moisture inherent in the packing and refrigeration process, traditionally you would use a plastic coating to line the inside of the box. Instead, ARTICO designed a packaging solution that was more environmentally friendly. In addition to creating a box with 100% recycled content, ARTICO also selected an innovative product to coat the inside of the box: EarthCoating™ by Smart Planet Technologies. EarthCoating™ is a mineral-based coating made of calcium carbonate and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). When compared to 100% plastic coating of 0.75 mil, this application
- Uses from 50% to 70% less plastic by weight
- Reduces Greenhouse Gases by up to 20%
- Reduces Energy Use by up to 10%
Using this environmentally conscious option allows Fra’Mani Handcrafted Foods to reduce their packaging foot print, and deliver a product that is not only good for your body but also good for the environment.
