Smart Planet Technologies has extended the licence agreement with Huhtamaki CupPrint, to continue the rapid growth of their product line of paper cups using EarthCoating®. The licence agreement extension also makes the product available to Huhtamaki Business units in select global markets.

Extension of agreement builds on the success of innovative paper cup offerings

Newport Beach, CA, Tuesday, June 8, 2020— Smart Planet Technologies has extended the licence agreement with Huhtamaki CupPrint, to continue the rapid growth of their product line of paper cups using EarthCoating®. The licence agreement extension also makes the product available to Huhtamaki Business units in select global markets.

The paper cups are made with 100% PEFC-certified paperboard and are specifically designed and qualified to be recycled in regular waste processing plants. In 2018, reCUP paper cups made by Huhtamaki CupPrint with EarthCoating were awarded the coveted AAA recyclability certification by the Institute cyclos-HTP in conjunction with the European Green Dot scheme, which is recognised throughout the EU & Switzerland, and awarded a classification in category 13, to be recovered along with uncoated mixed paper.

“We’ve been thrilled by the success of reCUP, and with the extension of our agreement, reaffirm the commitment to offering customers the latest in sustainable solutions. Innovation in paper cups and other foodservice packaging continue to advance the sustainability of paper-based packaging. Paper cups with EarthCoating deliver on the goal of paper cups certified to be compatible with conventional paper recycling systems”, says Will Lorenzi, President of Smart Planet Technologies.

“As paper cup design and collection continue to advance, we can meet consumer demand for both convenience and sustainability, meaning that paper cups will continue to have an important role to play in the coffee to-go business which has seen such successful growth in the past decade.  The reCUP and Re|UUSI product lines, paper cups using EarthCoating, have been particularly successful for us in that regard.  By offering customers genuine choice, they are able to use the cups most appropriate for their business and know that they are making a difference”, says Terry Fox, General Manager of Huhtamaki CupPrint Ltd.

When Linstol Took a Super Step to Reduce Plastic Waste

In 2017, Linstol introduced its customizable Super Cup to the market to reduce the environmental impact of catering resources in aviation. Air Calin and United Airlines are already using the product on board, with Linstol hoping many more will follow.

In 2017, Linstol introduced its customizable Super Cup to the market to reduce the environmental impact of catering resources in aviation. Air Calin and United Airlines are already using the product on board, with Linstol hoping many more will follow.

Traditionally, disposable paper cups used for hot drinks are created with a plastic coating, which means they are incompatible with conventional paper recycling systems and end up incinerated or in landfill. By contrast, Linstol’s Super Cup is made with EarthCoating, a mineral-enriched resin developed by material engineering company Smart Planet Technologies that uses up to 51% less plastic and can be easily pulped back into recycled paper products.

Linstol’s proprietary design for the Super Cup means there is little difference in weight between a standard double-wall hot cup and a Linstol Super Cup to ensure that switching to the product is a cost neutral-decision for airlines. It can also nest 40% more cups per stack, enabling easy pre- and post-use storage and collection.

“The Super Cup is designed to be valuable and easy for recyclers around the world to integrate into their paper recovery and recycling processes” – Mark Russell, Linstol

Mark Russell, CEO of Linstol, who spent months developing the product alongside director of Sales and Sustainability Bill Carrejo, commented, “The Super Cup is designed to be valuable and easy for recyclers around the world to integrate into their paper recovery and recycling processes. We consider environmental innovation an integral part of Linstol’s core values.”

Looking ahead, Linstol anticipates launching a single wall cup for cold beverages made with EarthCoating as a viable replacement for 100% plastic cups, along with a variety of other packaging, which could be optimized for environmental and economic benefits using EarthCoating.

“Supplying the Super Cup, as well as other products such as sugarcane bagasse dishes and food containers, bamboo napkins and compostable cutlery, allows Linstol to contribute to the tipping point in the airline industry that will see airlines eliminate plastics,” Russell continued.

Smart Planet Technologies to speak at the Rising Tide Summit

Leading engineering company for sustainable packaging materials, Smart Planet Technologies, to speak about the reCUP® recyclable paper cup and EarthCoating® with ocean conservation leaders and businesses

Leading engineering company for sustainable packaging materials, Smart Planet Technologies, to speak about the reCUP® recyclable paper cup and EarthCoating® with ocean conservation leaders and businesses

Smart Planet Technologies will be presenting at the Rising Tide Summit, scheduled to take place in San Pedro, CA on the 27th and 28th of March, 2019. The materials engineering and intellectual property company will be speaking about reCUP and EarthCoating, their recyclable solutions designed to address the 50 billion paper cups that end up in US landfills each year.

Paper cups are a mixed material, comprised of paper and plastic. Conventional recycling systems are not designed to process the plastic coatings usually found in paper cups, so paper cups are typically diverted to landfills.

Smart Planet Technologies has developed EarthCoating, a barrier coating for paper cups and other paper products that is fully compatible with conventional paper recycling. EarthCoating contains 51% less plastic than conventional coatings, and the reCUP, made with EarthCoating, can be pulped into recycled paper using conventional paper recycling equipment. A paper cup that is compatible with recycling systems is a valuable material to recover for use in the production of recycled paperboard products.

Recycling is an optimal end-of life solution for paper cups because it supports a circular economy, as paper materials can be recycled up to seven times. The solution has already become a global phenomenon, with millions of paper cups across having been sold by packaging manufacturers and distributors including Detpak, CupPrint, VaioPak, Pureco, Linstol, Bunzl, Sysco, and more.

Attendees of the event will be served coffee in reCUPs, which will be collected for recycling into new paper products by Allan Company, a leading materials recycling service provider, upon the completion of the 2-day event.

“The first step to getting paper cups recycled is to make them valuable and easy for recyclers to process through their conventional recycling equipment,” said Todd Gasparik, Vice President of Business Development for Smart Planet Technologies and presenter at the Rising Tide Summit.

“Solving tough problems requires a thirst for innovation.” Said Vipe Desai, Founder of the Rising Tide Summit and CEO of HDX. “Smart Planet Technologies is bringing forth a solution that is long overdue and is already having an impact on the marketplace. It’s exactly the type of innovation needed and attendees are going to have a chance to experience and learn all about their technology.”

The Rising Tide Summit is underwritten by the X Prize Foundation and Marisla Foundation, and will be attended by several NGO's that are focused on waste diversion, plastic reduction, increased recycling rates, and ocean conservation. Some of the participating NGO's are Ocean Institute, 5 Gyres, Final Straw, and AltaSea.

The problems of single-use plastic straws and un-recyclable paper cups might just be about to meet their match.

Their businesses are built on solving issues related to waste and we’ll learn how they’re doing, where they’re going and what can businesses and NGOs learn from their efforts.

Moderator: Dan Pingaro, President and CEO, Ocean Institute
Panelist: Emma Rose-Cohen, Founder, FinalStraw
Panelist: Todd Gasparik, Vice President of Business Development,Smart Planet Technologies
