The Technology Behind EarthCoating

EarthCoating is a suite of mineralized resin formulations that combine calcium carbonate (chalk) with polymer resins. The high mineral content — over 51% — means that during the paper recycling process, the coating behaves like clay rather than plastic, fracturing into small, dense particles that are easily separated from paper fibers in conventional recycling equipment.

Paper Stream Recyclable

EarthCoating is engineered to fracture into small, dense particles in the pulping process, avoiding the challenges found with traditional plastic coatings. Paper cups with EarthCoating qualify for Path 13, the premium uncoated paper recycling stream.

Waterproof & Greaseproof

EarthCoating EC-40 offers waterproof and grease proof barrier performance. All lab testing results are available including MVTR, Cobb, Canola Oil, and 3M Kit Test.

Heat Seal Performance

EarthCoating provides improved heat seal and fiber tear over 100% polymer coatings. The mineral content grabs and dispels heat faster, activating the polymer content faster and deeper into the surface, resulting in better heat seal performance.

Cost Competitive

EarthCoating EC-40 costs 15-25% less than bio-resin alternatives and falls in line with conventional neat polyolefin pricing. The mineral content replaces expensive polymer, reducing material costs.

Drop-In Solution

EarthCoating requires no capital expenditure or changes to existing manufacturing processes. It runs on standard extrusion coating equipment, ensuring smooth adoption for converters.

The most commonly used blend. Waterproof and greaseproof barrier. Cost-competitive with conventional polyolefins.

Mineralized PLA + BioPBS

A mineralized blend formulated to maintain the advantages of each resin while reducing total resin content and adding recyclability. Both recyclable and compostable.
